Career

Susanne Laugwitz-Aulbach was born in Osnabrück as the daughter of the state actor Walter Laugwitz and the opera singer Brigitte Laugwitz-Leitner. She studied theater studies , German literature and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and graduated in 1987 with a master's degree . After a subsequent stay in South America, she worked as a speaker for major cultural events at the Karlsruhe University of Music during the rectorate of Fany Solter .

In 1990 she moved to the cultural department of the city of Karlsruhe and over the years took over the municipal festival management of the "European Culture Days Karlsruhe", which she dealt with topics such as St. Petersburg, Istanbul or Rome and with projects such as the exhibition with the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg " Vom Glück des Lebens ”and Valery Gergiev's first guest performance in the West in 1996 with the ensemble of the Petersburg Opera ( Mariinsky Theater ) led to a widely acclaimed cultural event. She also headed the cultural public relations, marketing and sponsoring departments.

In 2008 she was elected director of the cultural office of the state capital Stuttgart. Among other things, she was responsible for the areas of cultural funding, the city library , the city archive , the Carl Zeiss planetarium , the Stuttgart Philharmonic and the planning staff for the city museum .

In April 2013 she was selected by a commission made up of councilors, mayors and administration as the new councilor for art and culture of the city of Cologne. Problems with the renovation of the Cologne Opera and Theater

Because the costs for the renovation of the Cologne Opera and the Drama Theater had more than doubled from the originally planned 250 million to 570 million euros (as of July 3, 2017), additional costs for the alternative venues of 110 million euros are incurred and the reopening at Has to be postponed seven years, Laugwitz-Aulbach has come under pressure. In addition, the renovation time for the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne has been doubled from the original three to the planned six years before construction work begins.

In 2015, when the stages could not be opened as planned, Laugwitz-Aulbach defended himself with the following statement: "I am not in charge here."

The Lord Mayor of Cologne, Henriette Reker , used the term “disaster” and, based on the findings of July 3, 2017, withdrew Ms. Laugwitz-Aulbach from responsibility for the cultural buildings. At times, the CDU, Greens and FDP in the city council considered voting out Laugwitz-Aulbach. The simple majority required for the motion would have been achieved, but the SPD opposed the demand and made it unlikely that the two-thirds majority required for the actual deselection would be achieved .
