Life

artistic education

From around 1892 to 1900, Suse Schmidt-Eschke took painting and drawing lessons from the Leipzig drawing teacher and city drawing inspector Fedor Flinzer . This was done in such a way that once a week she presented him with the drawings, which in the meantime had mostly been made from nature, without supervision. At the same time she stayed several times over several weeks to learn watercolor painting with Erwin Oehme in Dresden.

As she intended to become a drawing teacher, she took lessons in projection theory, shadow construction and perspective from Lamprecht in Leipzig. In 1902 she acquired knowledge of anatomy and skills in portrait and nude painting in Friedrich Fehr's studio in Karlsruhe. She then painted and etched in Berlin, Mölln, Lüneburg and on study trips under Wilhelm Feldmann's direction. Feldmann, with whom she said she was “the longest”, assessed her in 1918 as follows: “I am happy to testify to Miss Suse Schmidt-Eschke that, as my student, she pursued her artistic studies with zeal and success. She has not only created remarkable independent pictures - she has also done very good things in the field of etching. "

She acquired the skills of depicting flower still lifes from a Fraulein Rose in Berlin. Also in Berlin she was trained in the "Atelier-Schule Reimann" in the arts and crafts drawing. Back in Leipzig, she took part in nude drawing as a guest at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and the Book Industry for a few semesters . At this school she also took part in a stone drawing course with the lithographer Arthur Schelter. In the winter semester of 1899/1900 (October 16 to March 15) she attended lectures at the University of Leipzig. For many years, Suse Schmidt-Eschke was a member of the “General German Association of Artists”.
