Sven Jürgenson (born April 2, 1962 in Tartu ) is an Estonian diplomat who has been ambassador several times and has been the permanent representative to the United Nations since August 2015 .

Life

After attending school, Jürgenson completed a degree in data processing at the Tallinn University of Technology , which he completed with a master's degree, as well as additional studies at the Dresden University of Engineering . He then worked as a research assistant and head of the information process department at the Tallinn University of Technology between 1987 and 1990, before working as a senior specialist in information processes at the Eesti Instituut from 1990 to 1991 , which in 1989 was run by Lennart as a kind of shadow foreign ministry for the Estonian independence movement Meri was founded. In 1991 he entered the diplomatic service and was initially between 1991 and 1993 Counselor and Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy in Finland as well as the local offices of Estonian culture in Helsinki . During this time he also completed postgraduate studies at the Institut International d'Administration Publique in Paris in 1992 .

From 1993 to 1995, Jürgenson acted as counselor and business agent for the embassies in Austria , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Hungary and Slovenia . Subsequently, from 1996 to 1998 he was head of the department for security policy and international organization as well as head of the political department and deputy political director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also acted as a non-resident ambassador to Turkey between 1996 and 1998 and was then permanent representative to the United Nations for the first time from 1998 to 2000 . From 2000 to 2003 he was ambassador to the USA , Canada and Mexico and from 2003 to 2006 Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before he served as Foreign Policy Advisor to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves between 2006 and 2010 .

From 2010 to 2015, Jürgenson then held the post of ambassador to France and Monaco and as such was also accredited as permanent representative of Estonia to the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) . On August 13, 2015, he presented his credentials as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City . In addition, he was elected Chairman of the Economic and Financial Committee (Main Committee 2) of the UN General Assembly on May 31, 2017 .

Jürgenson is married and has two children.
