Sven Simon (pseudonym of Axel Springer junior ; born February 7, 1941 in Hamburg ; † January 3, 1980 ibid) was a German photographer and journalist .

Life

The son of the publisher Axel Springer was at times editor-in-chief of Welt am Sonntag , but has made a name for himself above all as a sports photographer and won numerous prizes for his work: Simon's photograph of the then German national player Uwe Seeler , who played at the final of the soccer World Cup 1966 leaves the pitch of the Wembley Stadium with his head hanging , voted " Sports Photo of the Century " by Welt am Sonntag . He also made the well-known picture of a visibly shaken Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt at the funeral for Hanns Martin Schleyer between the relatives.

At the age of 38 years Simon committed the Hamburg suicide . Since no suicide note appeared and no information was given by his family, the motives are in the dark. Simon was buried in the Groß-Flottbek cemetery in Hamburg.

In order to preserve his memory, Welt am Sonntag donated the Sven Simon Prize for nature and sports photography, endowed with a total of 14,000 euros, and his father donated the Sven Simon Park at Falkenstein in Hamburg.
