The Svaneti Mountains ( Georgian სვანეთის ქედი ) is an approximately 85 km long mountain range of the Greater Caucasus , which extends south of its main ridge in a west-east direction.
The Svaneti Mountains run along the border between the regions of Ratscha-Letschchumi and Lower Svaneti and Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti in the north of Georgia . It forms the watershed between the Enguri (in the north and west) and the Tcheniszqali (in the south). The right Zcheniszqali tributary Cheledula separates the mountains from the Egrissi Mountains, which run further south . The Svaneti Mountains reach a maximum height of 4009 m in the Laila . The mountains consist mainly of mica slate and partly of quartzite . The ridge is partially glaciated . Subalpine and alpine vegetation grows on the slopes . The lower areas are covered by beech , spruce and fir forests .
