Sweeny is 9.1 meters above sea level and 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico . The San Bernard River flows 1.6 km west of the city limits.

Once known as Adamston, the town was named after the family name of John Sweeny. The Sweeny house, marked with a Texas Historical Society medallion, was inhabited by a descendant of the Sweeny family until 1991. St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway laid a garden siding to this city in 1905. A post office was built in 1895, a general store and an Egrenier machine were completed in 1908. A school with 11 students at the beginning was only founded in 1911. In 1918 the city got a brick factory; an orchard and school district were completed in 1912. Oil was discovered in Old Ocean in 1934, which helped Sweeny's development and made the town rich. Sweeny's population in the late twentieth century fluctuated between 3,087 and 3,699.
