Sweeny is a city in Brazoria County , Texas in the United States .

Sweeny is 9.1 meters above sea level and 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico . The San Bernard River flows 1.6 km west of the city limits.

Once known as Adamston, the town was named after the family name of John Sweeny. The Sweeny house, marked with a Texas Historical Society medallion, was inhabited by a descendant of the Sweeny family until 1991. St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway laid a garden siding to this city in 1905. A post office was built in 1895, a general store and an Egrenier machine were completed in 1908. A school with 11 students at the beginning was only founded in 1911. In 1918 the city got a brick factory; an orchard and school district were completed in 1912. Oil was discovered in Old Ocean in 1934, which helped Sweeny's development and made the town rich. Sweeny's population in the late twentieth century fluctuated between 3,087 and 3,699.

According to the information from the 2000 census , Sweeny had 3,624 inhabitants in 1,338 households, of which 974 were families. The population density was 1,946.6 per 752.3 km². There were 1,444 housing units with an average area of 752.3 / km². The races were 75.25% White, 15.78% African , 1.02% Native American , 0.41% Asian, 5.99% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more Races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 13.71% of the population.
Of 1,338 households, 38.0% had no children under the age of 18, 53.8% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband, and 27.2% were non-families. 38.0% of all households were inhabited by the individual and 15.7% consisted of single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.65 people and the average family size was 3.14 people.
The city was home to 29.7% of those under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 or over older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 female residents there were 92.3 male residents. For every 100 female residents over 18 years of age, there were 87.3 males over 18 years of age.
The median household income of the city was 36,497 USD , the median income for a family 42,128 USD. Males had a median income of $ 43,854 versus $ 25,710 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,755. Approximately 10.4% of families and 9.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.4% aged 18 years and younger and 11.7% aged 65 years or older.
