In 1969 she and the astronomer Klym Churyumov discovered comet 67P , which bears both names. The asteroid (3945) Gerasimenko was also named after her in 1995.

Life

Gerassimenko studied astrophysics at the University of Kiev from 1963 to 1968 and then began an aspirantur . In September 1969 she accompanied Churyumov, a member of the staff at the main observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , on a comet -watching research trip to Alma-Ata . On the night of September 11-12, 1969, she accidentally discovered comet 67P after developing a photo plate for observing comet 32P / Comas Solá .

In 1973 she moved to Dushanbe and became a research assistant at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the Tajik SSR . Since then she has been researching and observing comets and other smaller objects in the solar system. In 1975 she was awarded a medal for “Research into New Astronomical Objects”.

On March 2, 2004, Gerassimenko and Churyumov were invited to the Guiana Space Center for the launch of the European space probe Rosetta , which was supposed to explore the comet Churyumov-Gerassimenko . At the invitation of DLR , she and Klim Tschurjumow followed the landing of Philae on 67P in Cologne on November 12, 2014 .
