Sylvester Stewart , called Sly Stone , (born March 15, 1943 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American singer , songwriter and music producer from the genres of funk , soul , rock and psychedelic rock . In 1967 he formed the band Sly & the Family Stone .

Alongside James Brown, Sly Stone is one of the co-founders of funk music and psychedelic music in the 1960s. He combined the music genres rock , soul , pop and jazz . His band Sly & the Family Stone became famous through a performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and exerted an influence on the hippie generation. The band broke up in the mid-1970s. Due to persistent drug problems , which often brought Sly Stone into conflict with the law, he increasingly disappeared from the scene in the late 1970s. He couldn't build on the success of Sly & the Family Stone. In September 2011 the Sly Stone album I'm Back was released ; In addition to new recordings, it contains three previously unpublished titles from 1988 and 1989.

Sly Stone had his last live appearance so far on August 23, 2015 in Red Bank (New Jersey) , when he supported the band The Family Stone - former members of Sly & The Family Stone - as keyboardist .

In 2004 Prince released his album Musicology , paying homage to Sly Stone in the lyrics of the title song of the same name . In 2008 the US music magazine Rolling Stone listed him as 78th of the 100 best singers and in 2015 ranked 42nd of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
