The former synagogue in Baden-Baden , a town in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1899 at Stephanienstraße 5 and destroyed in the November pogroms in 1938.

history

Only after 1862 could Jews settle in the city as citizens with equal rights . After a strong immigration, the Jewish community Baden-Baden was founded on November 2nd, 1890 . The prayer room in the Hotel Baldreit soon proved to be too small, which is why it was decided to build a synagogue.

The plans for the synagogue were drawn up by the Jewish architect Ludwig Levy (1854–1907), who had already built numerous synagogues. For example in Pforzheim , Barmen and Kaiserslautern .

The synagogue of the health resort was built in neo-Romanesque style, with a round arched portal and a large rose window on the south side. The synagogue on a cross-shaped floor plan has a transept and two stair towers (stairs to the women's galleries ), which were covered with pointed spiers . Next to the synagogue was the Jewish community center.

At the festive inauguration on August 16, 1899, the district rabbi Baruch Mayer from Bühl preached the festival . The service in the Jewish community of Baden-Baden was celebrated according to the Orthodox rite. Out of consideration for strictly religious spa guests , organ music and female singing in the synagogue were avoided .

November pogrom 1938

During the pogrom on November 10, 1938 , the Gestapo stole the cult objects made of precious metal . The approximately 80 Jewish men who were arrested on the same day had to listen to diatribes by SS leaders in the synagogue and the teacher of the Jewish community Arthur Flehinger was forced to read from Hitler's book: Mein Kampf . The abused men were taken to the Dachau concentration camp .

SS men set fire in the synagogue, which then burned out completely. In the weeks that followed, it was demolished, and the costs of demolition had to be paid for by the Jewish community.

Commemoration

The synagogue's property remained undeveloped after 1945 and was used as a parking lot. A few years ago a memorial stone was placed on the site of the former synagogue.
