The synagogue in Beilstein , a local community in the district of Cochem-Zell in Rhineland-Palatinate , was probably built in the Middle Ages . The former synagogue at Weingasse 13 is a protected architectural monument .
history
The synagogue is located in the former Jewish quarter , into which two small gates led. Parts of the building still preserved today could date from the late Middle Ages.
The synagogue was also visited by the Jewish people from Zell , Bruttig (see Synagogue in Bruttig ) and Ediger who lived in the area, until their own synagogues were established in these places.
After most families left and emigrated, the synagogue was abandoned before 1920. In 1925 the synagogue building was sold. The new owner used the building as a barn or wine press room and the vaulted cellar as a stable.
Todays use
At the beginning of the 1990s, the secular synagogue was bought by a gallery owner and restored with great care. The original condition of the prayer room and the women's gallery was restored.
