history

Synagogue in Buttenwiesen, south and east side

The first synagogue of the Jewish community of Buttenwiesen was built around 1630. It was so badly damaged in a fire in 1852 that the Jewish community had a new building built in 1856/57. This was created according to the plans of the master builder Josef Kratzer from Unterthürheim . The inauguration took place on 20./21. February 1857.

Pogrom of November 10, 1938

The interior of the synagogue and the rituals were completely destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 .

architecture

A two-story building with a gable roof rises above a rectangular floor plan . In the east there was a polygonal apse with a round Misrach window , which inside received the Holy Ark . The neo-Romanesque building was divided into three axes on its western gable facade . The high central portal was framed by two columns and above it was a horseshoe arch with a round skylight . There were two clover-shaped windows to the right and left of the portal. A cornice seperated the first floor from the first floor and on the central axis stood a coupled window with horseshoe arches. The following saying could be read about it: How holy is this place! Here is nothing other than God's house, and here is the gate of heaven! ( Genesis 28:17). In the gable was a quatrefoil window and a clock, the tablets of the law were enthroned on the ridge above and the brazen serpent stood on them . The eaves had windows that were closed with a clover leaf on the ground floor and a horseshoe arch on the upper floor. The synagogue in Binswangen , which was completed in 1837, has the same window design and could have served as a model.

The current photos show that all these structural features were removed during the renovation after 1945.

Todays use

The building was converted by the municipality of Buttenwiesen after 1945 and used as a school from 1953 to 1994. The Free Kindergarten Buttenwiesen has been located in the former synagogue since 2009 .

In 1995 a memorial stone was erected in front of the former synagogue in memory of the Jewish community in Buttenwiesen.
