synagogue

The synagogue in Göllheim , a local community in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was built in 1848/50 and devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was located at Berggasse 120 / corner of Bauchgasse 4.

history

The Jewish community of Göllheim already owned a synagogue at the end of the 18th century, which was owned by a community member and made available to the community free of charge.

The new building began in 1848 and the inauguration took place on April 19-21, 1850. The mayor, the Protestant pastor and many citizens were present at the celebrations. The synagogue was extensively renovated in 1912.

architecture

The synagogue in Göllheim was a plastered building on a rectangular floor plan with a gable roof . At the height of the women's gallery there were four oculi facing the street . The two portals with double-leaf coffered doors , the separate entrances for men and women, had horseshoe arches , as did the windows on the first floor . These are characteristic style elements of oriental architecture . The hall, spanned by a cove ceiling , with a length of 11.18 m and a width of 6.65 m, offered space for 60 men and the women's gallery had 35 seats.

time of the nationalsocialism

The synagogue in Göllheim was desecrated during the November pogrom in 1938 and the interior was destroyed. In 1939 or 1941 the building had to be sold to the municipality.

After further changes of ownership, the building was demolished in 1971 as part of the renovation work.

Commemoration

In 1979 and 1988, memorial stones were erected on the property. A wall of encounters made of spoils from the former synagogue, a window or portal arch and a round arched window were set up at the municipal administration.
