Synagogue (Gochsheim)
The Gochsheim Synagogue is a former synagogue in Gochsheim , a district of Kraichtal in the district of Karlsruhe in north-western Baden-Württemberg , which was built in 1784. The building is a protected monument and is located at Hauptstrasse 70.
description
A synagogue in Gochsheim is mentioned as early as 1662. In 1764 , a new synagogue was built on Hauptstrasse, near the Protestant church, by the wealthy protective Jew Baruch Dessauer, whose son Alois Dessauer became known as the Electoral Mainz court banker . The baroque style building also housed the Jewish school .
Because of the insufficient number of the Gochsheim Jewish community , regular services could no longer be held since the middle of the 19th century . In 1882 the synagogue was sold and converted into a residential building by the new owner.
inscription
In the archway of the former synagogue there is an inscription still preserved today with the following wording: "NEV ERBAVT 1764 VON BHD MBD". BHD stands for Baruch Dessauer and MBD for his wife Mindel (Baruch Dessauer).
