The Old Synagogue in Flehingen , a district of the municipality of Oberderdingen in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg , was a former synagogue with house from the 18th century. The building at risk of collapse was on the list of monuments and was demolished in February 2016.

history

The Jewish community of Flehingen has been recorded since the 16th century. Their residential area was concentrated in the Hinterdorf , also called Judengasse , today Samuel-Friedrich-Sauter- Strasse. Until the construction of the later old synagogue in Judengasse in the 18th century, the Jewish community probably only had one prayer room in a private house.

The old synagogue was closed after the new synagogue was inaugurated in 1874. The new synagogue was desecrated in 1938 and destroyed in 1940.

Building

The synagogue had a smaller annex that served as the house of the prayer leader and as a classroom. The building was used as a shed after 1874 and was left to decay for a long time until it was demolished.

inscription

On the entrance side of the synagogue, below the eaves, was the following inscription: “Built by community leader Mosche Bierig and his wife Keile. 'Your barns will be full and your wine press overflowing' 1852 ”.
The first sentence is German, but written in Hebrew letters, except for the title for "Community Leader". The second sentence is a Hebrew quote from Prov 3,10  EU .
