The synagogue in Bruchsal , a town in the Karlsruhe district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1880/81 and destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .

history

The modern Jewish community of Bruchsal initially had a prayer room in a private house. The building at Huttenstrasse 2 was destroyed in the Second World War.

In 1802 a separate synagogue building was built on the property at Friedrichstrasse 78. Since this synagogue had become too small for the growing number of parishioners in the course of the 19th century, it was decided in 1878 to build a new one at the same location. The foundation stone was laid on June 10, 1880 and the inauguration took place on September 16, 1881. The architects were Jakob Henkenhaf and Friedrich Ebert from Heidelberg .

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogroms in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire and destroyed.

architecture

The synagogue was built in the neo-renaissance style. The facade was reminiscent of the Tempietto of Donato Bramante in Rome and had similarities with the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem . This was seen as an image of the Jerusalem temple.

From 1926 to 1928 the entire interior of the synagogue was painted by the Bruchsal-born painter Leo Kahn (1894–1983).

The wrought iron grille with flanking candlesticks in front of the dais of the Torah shrine was the work of the artist Benno Elkan (1877–1960).

The synagogue had women's galleries and an organ . Due to the location of the property, the visitor entered the synagogue from the east and had to pass the Torah shrine, which he turned his back to.

Commemoration

After 1945 a fire station was built on the synagogue's property . In 1966 a memorial plaque was put up for the synagogue. In 2000 a new plaque was unveiled.
