The Nürtingen – Neuffen line , also known as the Tälesbahn after the Neuffen Valley , is a branch line in Baden-Württemberg . The branch line branches off in Nuertingen from the plochingen-tübingen railway and leads from there to Neuffen . The 8.9 kilometer long standard gauge line was opened for passenger traffic on June 1, 1900 and also for freight traffic on June 21, 1900; it overcomes a height difference of 111 meters. The owner has been the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG) since the beginning , which is now part of Transdev GmbH . In the Stuttgart Transport and Tariff Association (VVS), this route is run as the R82 regional train line.

The route is used by around 3,500 passengers per day.

business

Valley railway below Hohenneuffen Castle

In Nürtingen there is a regular connection to the trains to Stuttgart and Tübingen . There is a rigid schedule , every 60 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes during rush hour. The travel time of twelve minutes makes it possible to get by with only one vehicle round-trip even at 30-minute intervals, train crossings no longer take place in scheduled operation today. Rail traffic is idle on Sundays, with the exception of the regular steam train journeys of the Society for the Maintenance of Rail Vehicles (GES), which are marketed under the name Sofazügle . Since March 24, 2013, on an experimental basis, regular hourly operations have also been taking place on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

WEG's main workshop is in Neuffen . Vehicles from other routes are also serviced there.

At the end of 2012, ETCS test drives began in the late evening hours and on weekends. An on-board device from the manufacturer Thales is being tested . For this purpose, Eurobalises were laid on an 8.3 km long section .

vehicles

Today's

Valley Railway Regio Shuttle

Since 2000, only Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 vehicles have been used on the valley railway . Only with these powerful railcars (engine power 2 × 257 kW) is it possible to keep the journey time of twelve minutes. This would not be possible with the older vehicles in the WEG inventory.

A total of four railcars are available: VT 442 ("Katja"), VT 445 ("Alice"), VT 446 ("Agnes") and VT 447 ("Mara"). All four vehicles are stationed in Neuffen.

Former

Before that, mostly used railcars of various types were used. So were Esslinger motor coaches of the first series as the T 20 (since 1984: VT 403) or T 10 (since 1984: VT 402) in daily use. The T 20 was brand new on the Tälesbahn in 1953, the T 10 by the Strohgäubahn around 1982 ( operated by the Württemberg branch lines, now also by WEG). From the second series of Esslingen railcars, the T 19 (since 1984: VT 405) drove on the route.

The T 11 (since 1984: VT 401), which was equipped with 4 × 210 hp Büssing engines and was also used for limestone transport from Neuffen to Nürtingen until 1972, was mainly used for morning school traffic. This railcar was a “Dessauer” from 1928 , acquired second-hand by the Federal Railroad in 1954 and converted , which was in operation between Nürtingen and Neuffen until 2000.

In addition, the two T 23 and 24 railcars , mostly in double traction, were used for the limestone trains. However, they left the valley railway in 1979 after the stone transports ended and came to the Untere Kochertal railway from Jagstfeld to Ohrnberg. This also belonged to the WEG. T 23 and 24 were equipped with automatic Scharfenberg couplings.

The Fuchs VT 06 multiple unit came in 1979 from the Untere Kochertalbahn into the Neuffener Tal and was only used sporadically on Saturdays because the small two-axle vehicle could hardly handle the traffic. Today the VT 06 belongs to the Ulm Railway Friends and is operational.
