geography

The place is about 5 km from the Norwegian border on the E 18 in a varied lake landscape at the northern end of the Dalsland Canal . The last two locks of the canal are located in Töcksfors, with a total height of 10.1 m, which connect the lakes Foxen and Töck . Not far from the village is the so-called guest harbor in the Sandviken Bay in Foxen . The Foxen forms the northern end of the much larger Stora Le , which is the 19th largest lake in Sweden. It stretches its bays west into Norway and south to Dals Ed, about 70 km away in the historic province of Dalsland .

Töcksfors is located in the Töcksmark. The Töcksmark geographically describes an area that can be assigned to Lake Töck and that historically forms part of the borderland between Norway and Sweden. In 1974 the municipality of Töcksmark, whose center was Töcksfors, was incorporated into the municipality of Årjäng. Only the parish of Töcksmark still exists. Like Töcksfors, this so-called Församling is growing rapidly and in 2007 alone the population of the small community increased by 64 to 1,756. It thus has significantly more members than the location itself.

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to cable production, the precision and paper industries in particular determine economic activity. The importance of retail is growing. In October 2005, one of the largest shopping centers in Sweden, with an area of 28,000 square meters, was inaugurated by the Swedish king in the center of the town . Many customers come from Norway in particular to shop cheaply in the EU country Sweden .

Local sports clubs have been running a 2.5 km long artificial snow trail in winter since 2007.

The construction of a new sports hall is planned.

Events in the frontier during World War II

During the Second World War , a large number of soldiers were posted to Töcksfors in order to defend the area near the Norwegian border on what was then Reichsweg  5 against a possible attack by German troops. Many anti-tank traps and underground fortifications had to be built along the border for this purpose. The situation was tense, but the expected attack did not materialize.

A few days after the occupation of Norway in April 1940, the Norwegian General Erichsen, responsible for the defense of Østfold , decided to resign. He and his soldiers crossed the border towards Töcksfors, where the 5,000 men were disarmed.

Many Norwegians also fled across the border on different routes. From Oslo we went east through forests and over lakes. Numerous residents on both sides of the border risked their lives for the refugees . They made themselves available as border guards to bring both Jews and resistance fighters to neutral Sweden to safety. One of the most popular routes ended with Rut and Paul Edvinsson on Römungsnäset right on the border in Östervallskog northwest of Töcksfors. In addition, couriers repeatedly crossed the border, including with embassies for and from the embassies in Oslo .

One of the Norwegian refugees was the twenty-one-year-old Hans who wanted to go to Great Britain from Töcksfors in order to be trained there for the resistance. Staffan Trossholmen describes in an essay the fate of young Norwegians from the environment of the resistance.
