The Bottlenose Dolphin is a German icebreaker that was last used for the Magdeburg Waterways and Shipping Office . Until its decommissioning in August 2015, at 111 years of age, it was the oldest ship in the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration . In November 2015 the ship was renamed Prof. Otto Lidenbrock .

History of bottlenose dolphins

The ship was built as hull number 41 by the Wiemann brothers' shipyard in Brandenburg an der Havel . The Royal Elbe River Construction Administration put the bottlenose dolphins into service in 1904 and used them as ice breakers and tugs from Hitzacker . At that time the ship was propelled by a two-cylinder steam engine with 130 horsepower .

Towards the end of the Second World War , the bottlenose dolphin was moved to the opposite bank of the Elbe and later sank there. In 1947 it was lifted, repaired in Havelberg and in 1948 placed under the control of the German Seebaggerei in Rostock . From 1955 the ship was used again on the Elbe by the Wittenberge Waterways Authority .

For conversion to motor vessel that was porpoises decommissioned 1,962th With a new marine diesel engine of the type SKL 8 NVD 36 and an output of 240  kW , the modernized ship came back to the Wittenberge Waterways Authority in 1964. In 1980 the VEB Wasserstraßenbetrieb und Freizeit (WBU) Magdeburg took over the bottlenose dolphins and after the reunification of Germany she worked for the Magdeburg Waterways and Shipping Office until August 2015.

HanseCrew Berlin acquired the ship from Vebeg on November 10, 2015 and took it over on November 13. It was renamed Prof. Otto Lidenbrock and relocated to the historic port of Brandenburg . The operational ship is to be stationed in Berlin from April 2016 while retaining the full certificate . It will then be available as a traditional ship for pushing, towing and ice breaking operations as well as for trips and sightseeing .
