history

founding

In 1874, twenty members of Gelsenkirchener TV founded their own gymnastics club in 1863 due to differences of opinion with the Turner Club . By 1892 the association grew to 338 members. However, the association was unable to maintain this size in the long term; in 1903 it again had only 170 members. In 1911 it finally merged with BV Gelsenkirchen . BV was relatively successful as a football club and had reached the regional finals for the West German football championship last year . As a result of the merger, the gymnastics offer was expanded to include various ball sports.

Merger and clean divorce

In 1919 the TC merged with the SuS Schalke 96 to form the gymnastics and game club Gelsenkirchen 1874/1896 . In the course of the so-called clean separation between gymnastics and sport, the merger was dissolved again in 1924. In 1928 the association was given its old name back. In 1934 the club did not only do gymnastics, but also athletics , handball , hockey , tennis , swimming , hiking , skiing , summer games, fistball , fencing and singing.

Heinz Kreulich's successes

After the Second World War, Heinz Kreulich, a TC track and field athlete, celebrated great successes in the long jump . After third places at the German championships in 1947 and 1948, Kreulich became German champion in 1949. He also set a European record in his discipline in 1949.

Successes of Günter Lyhs

In the mid-1950s, an outstanding talent grew up in the ranks of gymnasts. Günter Lyhs won the German junior championship in 1956. In 1959 he also won the German title in floor exercise for adults . The big breakthrough came in 1960. He was not only German champion in all-around , but took the bars , the rings , the horse , in the floor exercise and horizontal bar five other German championship title. In the following years Lhys collected other German titles. He was successful on the ground again in 1961 and 1962, on the horizontal bar in 1962 as well and three times in a row from 1965 to 1967. He also repeated his German championships in 1962 and 1964 on rings, on horses in 1965 and 1966 and on parallel bars in 1964. Finally, in 1967, he repeated his all-around title again. However, Lyhs won the title from 1964, including the bronze medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics with the German team in the team classification , for Kierspe .

Bounce ball

Prellball initially developed into the most successful team sport at the Turner Club . In 1976, the men took third place at the German championships, and a year later they even became runner-up. The women then even won the German championship in 1984, 1989 and 1990. In 1996 a runner-up followed before the department was closed in 2001 due to a lack of young talent.

Disabled sports

The department has been working for people with disabilities since 1979. So part Rudi Schwietering several times to the medal winners at the Paralympics with the volleyball national team: bronze in 1980 was followed by silver in 1984 and finally gold in 1988 and 1992 in Barcelona. In this latter success, Oliver Müller was also part of the successful team. In 1996 Schwietering were among the German gold medal winners for the last time and again Müller.
