TER Grand Est is a transport company in France and operates as a sub-network of the national regional transport network Transport express régional for the Grand Est region . Railways and supplementary bus routes are operated. TER Grand Est was created when the timetable changed on December 11, 2016 by merging the previously independent TER Alsace , TER Champagne-Ardenne and TER Lorraine .

history

On January 1, 2016, the Alsace , Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne regions were merged to form the new Grand Est region. When the timetable changed on December 11, 2016, the TER networks were merged, and the operating contract between the region and the SNCF was signed on December 19 . At the start of operations, a total of 1,616 trains and 450 buses ran daily in the TER Grand Est network. A new, harmonized price system came into force on September 1, 2017. In terms of the number of trains, the TER Grand Est is the second largest TER regional network (after the Transilien in the capital region Île-de-France ).

The operation of trains on the Mulhouse – Paris route , previously part of the SNCF's Intercité s network, was transferred to the Grand Est region on January 1, 2018. One of the longest TER train routes in France now operates here with a length of 515 km. On December 22, 2018, rail traffic on the Épinal – Saint-Dié and Sarreguemines – Sarre-Union routes was discontinued and replaced by bus services. New, higher fares have been in effect since March 20 if the ticket is only bought on the train. The measure, justified by the SNCF as a means against fraud, met with criticism from rail customer associations.

On March 28, 2019, the regional council approved partial liberalization of local passenger transport. Two lots are to be advertised . The first lot is to include the renovation and operation of the Nancy – Contrexéville line, which was closed in 2016 . In the second lot, the operation on the Strasbourg – Molsheim – Sélestat , Strasbourg – Molsheim – St-Dié-des-Vosges , as well as on some bus routes will be tendered. The start of operations is planned for 2022.

The TER Grand Est has been operating on the Fluo Grand Est network , which unites various transport companies under one umbrella brand, since spring 2019 . The brand name TER Fluo is used here.

Tracks & vehicles

Most of the vehicles in the TER Grand Est come from the terminated TER networks in the Alsace, Lorraine & Champagne-Ardenne regions. Exceptions are the Coradia Liner units and some locomotives of the BB 26000 series , which were only procured after the reform.

With the TER 200 and the TER Vallée de la Marne, TER Grand Est operates two TER lines with its own branding.

TER Vallée de la Marne

The TER Vallée de la Marne was introduced on June 10, 2007. After the Est européenne high-speed line went into operation , the SNCF decided to discontinue long-distance trains from Paris to Châlons-en-Champagne and western Lorraine. The regional councils of the Picardie, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine regions at that time therefore decided to commission the SNCF with the operation of a TER line between Paris-Est, Châlons-en-Champagne and Saint-Dizier or Bar-le-Duc. In December 2018, some trips beyond Bar-le-Duc to Nancy and Strasbourg were extended.

Until December 2017, the trains were made up exclusively of locomotives of the BB 15000 series and Corail “Plus” wagons . The trains offer first and second class areas. Since the end of 2017, the wagon trains have been successively replaced by Coradia Liner units ( B 85000 series ). However, the capacity of the new railcars is insufficient, which is why the Corail cars are also to be modernized. In addition, locomotives of the BB 26000 series were procured to replace the 45-year-old BB 15000 series vehicles.
