biography

Lanning learned to ski at the age of three. In 1999 he won the Super G of the Whistler Cup . In December of the same year he took part in the FIS races for the first time , and from November 2000 he played in the Nor-Am Cup . As a teenager, Lanning was one of the most promising talents of all. In 2000/01 he was ranked first in his age category worldwide in the slalom and super-G disciplines . Due to various injuries, he was unable to achieve his potential for several years. On November 22, 2002, he competed in his first World Cup race, the giant slalom in Park City (where he now lives). He had to stop the three following seasons after just a few races.

On December 20, 2006, Lanning won the first World Cup points as 19th in the Super-G in Hinterstoder . At the super combined in Beaver Creek on November 29, 2007, he was among the top ten, three months later he was American downhill champion. His best results so far in the World Cup are two 9th places, achieved in the runs from Lake Louise on November 29, 2008 and from Val Gardena on December 20, 2008. In January 2009 he fell on the Hahnenkamm run in Kitzbühel and had to end the season due to a knee injury quit early.

After the injury break, he fell badly on November 28, 2009 in the downhill race in Lake Louise. He suffered a dislocation of his left knee and a fractured cervical vertebra and was not able to participate in any further races. In the 2012/13 season he worked as a trainer for the US ski team for the first time.
