The Ta'Pinu class is a class of double-ended ferries operated by the Maltese shipping company Gozo Channel Line .

description

The ships of the class were built to replace two previously operated double-ended ferries, the Mgarr and the Cittadella . They were the first newbuildings of the shipping company after ships previously taken over from other shipping companies were used. The design of the ships was based on the two previously operated double-ended ferries. The construction of the ships cost around 42 million Maltese lira .

The ships are operated by Gozo Channel Line between Mgarr in Gozo and Ċirkewwa in Malta . The passage between the two ports takes around 25 minutes.

The ships are powered diesel-electric by four propeller gondolas made by Ulstein Bergen, two of which are attached to each end of the ship. The propeller pods are driven by four electric motors. The two propeller pods at each end of the ship are controlled in combination.

For electricity generation are four generators each with 1,200  kW power available, from four-stroke - six-cylinder - Diesel engines are driven by the manufacturer Norma, each with 1,325 kW of power. A generator powered by a Caterpillar diesel engine is installed as an emergency generator . The ships reach a speed of around 13  knots .

The ships have a continuous vehicle deck. At both ends there is a visor that can be opened upwards , behind which there are ramps for loading and unloading the ships. There is space for 72 cars on the vehicle deck. The ships are equipped with an additional, height-adjustable vehicle deck on both sides of the vehicle deck. A further 66 cars can be carried on these decks, so that the total capacity is 138 cars. The height-adjustable deck of the Ta'Pinu was retrofitted as the first ship in its class in 2012.

The passenger deck is located above the vehicle deck. In the midships area, the ships are equipped with access for passengers traveling without a vehicle. The access is equipped with a pedestrian ramp. Above the vehicle deck of the ferries are provided at both ends Wheelhouses mounted.
