NGC 3683 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 80 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with four other galaxies, it is a member of the NGC 3642 group ( LGG 234 )

The Type Ic supernova SN 2004C was observed here.

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 18, 1790 .
