NGC 3697 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 277 million light years from the Milky Way and about 200,000 ly in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the Hickson Compact Group HGC 53 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 700 and IC 701 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on February 24, 1827 .
