The Hannover Synagogal Choir is a mixed chamber choir dedicated to the care and preservation of the Jewish-liturgical music of Europe in the late Romantic period. The ensemble, based in Hanover, is dedicated to the performance of the Ashkenazi tradition of Central and Eastern Europe and is listed in the register of good practice examples of the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage .
history
2004 to 2017
The work of the Hanover Synagogal Choir dates back to 2004: a large part of the ensemble belonged to the European Synagogal Choir (previously: Ensemble for synagogal music) under the direction of Andor Izsák until 2017 .
The European Synagogal Choir gave numerous concerts at home and abroad, including on a tour of Hungary in the Golden Hall of the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and in the synagogues of Debrecen and Szeged . The choir also released several CDs and a double DVD with synagogal music.
Since 2018
The Synagogal Choir Hanover in its current semi-professional line-up ( SSAATTBB ) was founded in early 2018. The artistic direction ( organ / conducting , rehearsal ) of the Synagogal Choir Hanover took over, after years of personal participation in the choir, the Hanover- based church musician and lecturer Sören Sönksen . The ideal of the choir is a homogeneous, atmospheric, dense ensemble sound that does justice to the sacred foundation of the music performed and at the same time authentically sets the romantic soul of the compositions of European cantors or mostly Jewish composers of synagogue music to music.
The Choir Whitsun 2018 had its premiere in front of an audience at the Musica Sacra International Festival in Marktoberdorf in the Allgäu . The choir gave a number of encounter concerts with choirs from cultural and religious circles from distant regions and continents and also organized its own “studio” as a workshop on synagogue music for participants and guests of the festival .
For the end of January 2019, an invitation to Alsace in Strasbourg for the international festival Les Sacrées Journées de Strasbourg followed : the choir, each together with other festival participants, performed two full-length concerts, including the opening concert in the Église St. Thomas .
In March 2019, the Hanover Synagogal Choir made a guest appearance in Gotha in the St. Bonifatius Church as part of the Night of Music of the Days of Choral and Orchestra Music , alternately organized by the Federal Association of German Orchestra Associations and the Federal Association of German Choir Associations .
On July 6, 2019, the Hanover Synagogal Choir sang its first full-length concert in front of a home audience in the Neustädter Hof- und Stadtkirche St. Johannis , as well as a gala concert on the occasion of 15 years of the Synagogal Choir in Hanover .
Awards
In March 2020, based on its musical work, the choir was included as a good practice example in the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage , area: revitalization of synagogal choral music of the 19th and 20th centuries in Central and Eastern Europe .
