As of March 2019, the Federal Association of German Orchestra Associations (BDO) was the umbrella organization for all associations of non-professional orchestras and ensembles in Germany.
On March 29, 2019, the BDO and the Federal Association of German Choir Associations merged to form an overarching umbrella organization for amateur music, the Federal Music Association Choir & Orchestra eV (BMCO).
goals and tasks
The aim of the BDO was to promote the practice of music among broad sections of the population and to coordinate the associations that it includes. Activities to strengthen the public perception of the orchestras and music ensembles, extracurricular musical education for young people, the organization of competitions and the development of programs and workshops were also used. To this end, the BDO administered the funds made available by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth in connection with the children and youth plan as well as the measures of the support program for cultural education in Germany “Culture makes you strong. Alliances for Education ”of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research .
Organizational forms
Forms of organization were the presidium, the general assembly and the office.
The Presidium consisted of the President, his deputy and the respective representatives of the fields of wind music , trombone choirs , harmonica , string instruments as well as symphony and chamber orchestras .
The eleven member associations of the umbrella association were most recently:
- The Federation of German Brass Music Associations (BDB)
- The Bund Deutscher Zupfmusiker eV (BDZ)
- The Association for Plucking and Folk Music Saar eV (BZVS)
- The Bund Saarländischer Musikvereine eV (BSM)

- The German Zither Music Association (DZB)
- The Evangelical Trumpet Service in Germany eV (EPiD)
These associations in turn consist of numerous smaller member associations and, due to structures that have evolved over time, are very different in terms of their size, organizational forms and the number of amateur musicians represented in them . Overall, the BDO represented around two million people who make music in around 35,000 ensembles and orchestras.
The office was located at Cluser Strasse 5 in Trossingen.
activities
The BDO organized - in alternation with the Federal Association of German Choir Associations (BDC) - the days of choral and orchestral music, the competition of the selected orchestras and the German music meeting 60+.
Since 2006, the BDO has awarded the Hans Lenz Medal annually to individual personalities or institutions for outstanding services to amateur music making. The name of the medal is reminiscent of Hans Lenz , who held the third presidency of the BDO. The winners include Sir Simon Rattle , José Antonio Abreu and Bayerischer Rundfunk . Every two years it also bestows the Zelter plaque and Pro-Musica plaque donated by the Federal President . The awards have been given by the Federal Music Association of Choirs & Orchestra since 2019.
