Taco Ockerse (born July 21, 1955 in Jakarta ) is a Dutch pop singer who became famous for his cover version of the Irving Berlin hit Puttin 'on the Ritz .

Personal

He has Dutch parents and grew up in the Netherlands , the USA , Singapore , Luxembourg , Germany and Belgium , where he graduated from school in 1973 in Brussels. He then studied interior design and graduated from drama school in Hamburg.

Career

Beginning

From 1975 Taco was a member of the Thalia Theater (Hamburg) . In 1979 he played the chino in Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story under John Neumeier . At the end of 1979 he founded his own band under the name Taco's Bizz and went on tour. In 1981 he got his first record deal with Polydor. Also in 1981 he took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest with the title Dreams need time , where he finished 12th.

1982–1984: The years at RCA

In September 1982 Taco switched to RCA Records and recorded the single Puttin 'on the Ritz together with producer David Parker in the Hamburg peer studios . A first tour under the new style specification ( step dance routines inspired by Fred Astaire , appearance in evening wear) through Sweden followed. Taco caused controversy when he used dancers painted black in the accompanying video .

For the single he received the first gold record . The LP After Eight was completed and released. The following year, the European tour and promotional campaigns began to show success: platinum from Canada, winning the Golden Europe , tour of the USA, but also appearances such as in the German television game show Die Montagmaler ( ARD ) on April 19, 1983. In the spring of 1984, Puttin reached 'on the Ritz # 4 on the US Billboard charts. The following singles Singin 'in the Rain and Cheek to Cheek did not achieve such great success.

In 1984 Taco recorded the follow-up LP Let's Face the Music with Parker in Hamburg . This was followed by TV appearances, tours through Japan and the German-speaking countries. He won the Best Singer Award at the Tokyo Music Festival . Since the LP / CD could not repeat the success of the debut by far, the contract with RCA was not extended.

1985–1986: return to Polydor

In 1985 Taco returned to Polydor: The idea of ​​putting on cover versions of well-known swing-era songs was pursued again, this time with a big band instead of synthesizers. The result was Swing Classics - In the Mood for Glenn Miller ; two more singles in the fall, Heartbreak City and Superphysical Resurrection , then announced a style shift . In 1986 the album Tell Me That You Like It came out, in which, in addition to pop numbers, an emphasis was placed on Brazilian samba and Jorge Ben Jor's samba / bossa nova sound, some of which he interpreted in Portuguese ( Mas que nada , Chove Chuva ).

Later career

After another label change, the single Got to Be Your Lover and the CD Love Touch were released . The declining success made Taco switch back to acting. In the following years he was in the television series Das Erbe der Guldenburgs and in Detlev Buck's film Karniggels .

He contributed a song to the film music for Go Trabi Go . In 1992 he was back at Polydor, Tico Tico appeared. In 1994 he played the leading role in the musical Shakespeare Rock 'n' Roll , in 1998 in the Berlin Metropol Theater the leading role in the musical Yesterday and released a CD at the same time. In the late 1990s he worked with ex- Kin-Ping-Meh singer Geff Harrison .

On October 11, 2009, Russian television filmed the Hits of the 20th Century program . Taco sang Puttin 'on the Ritz in the episode through the 1930s. The show aired in January 2010. On November 27, 2009 he performed Puttin 'on the Ritz at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow. In addition, he was a star guest in the 2009 New Year's show on Russian television.

In July 2010, Cleopatra Records, Los Angeles, released an entirely new recording of Puttin 'on the Ritz . Taco's vocals were recorded in Germany, while the backing tracks were recorded by top studio musicians in Los Angeles.

On March 1, 2011 the new song Timeless Love was released , which was written and produced by Edgar Rothermich and Matthias Muentefering in the late 1980s. This studio recording, which Taco recorded as a duet with the singer Rozaa Wortham in Berlin, was remixed in the USA in 2010 and is now available as a download with the permission of Taco.

On March 11, 2011, Taco had an appearance with Puttin 'on the Ritz in the program The Ultimate Chart Show - The Most Successful Evergreens of All Time on RTL.

He currently lives in Germany, where he still performs with his band and as a gala artist.
