Tadeusz Kulisiewicz (born November 13, 1899 in Kalisz , † August 18, 1988 in Warsaw ) was a Polish graphic artist .

Studied at the Poznan State School of Decorative Arts (1922–1923) and at the Warsaw Art Academy (1923–1929). 1933–1939 he taught drawing at the Warsaw Art Academy, in 1946 became its professor. From 1955 he was a member of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and from 1965 an honorary member of the Florentine Art Academy .

Artistic creation

In 1926 Kulisiewicz visited a village in the Polish Beskids - Szlembark in the Nowy Targ municipality for the first time . Since then he has visited the remote, forgotten village several times throughout his life. 1928–1930 a woodcut cycle "Szlembark" was created, which showed the village in its blunt, austere beauty, in contrast to the fashion of the time of portraying the goralen folklore happily dancing. Further woodcut cycles were created later: “Shepherd's Hut” (1932–1933), “Methods” (1934), “A Village in Gorce” (1935–1936), “Drawings from Szlembark” (1939).

During the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 , his studio burned with 70 finished printing blocks . After the Second World War , Kulisiewicz rejected the art of woodcuts and devoted himself to drawing and drypoint etching . In 1945, Kulisiewicz made drawings of the Warsaw ruins on site. Later 100 ink drawings were made from it.

In the following years Kulisiewicz made several trips abroad. He visited East Berlin several times, where he recorded the performances of the Brecht pieces " Mother Courage and Her Children " (1949), " The Caucasian Chalk Circle " (1954) and "The Life of Galilei " (1957) in drawings in the Berliner Ensemble .

After the next trips he created cycles of drawings from Czechoslovakia (1951), China (1952), India (1956), Mexico (1957, 1958/1959), Venice (1958 and 1961) and Brazil (1963).
