On the day of the cemetery , various events are offered at numerous cemeteries in the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland . The aim of the two days of action on every third weekend in September (Saturday and Sunday) is to bring the visitors closer to the importance of the respective cemetery both as a resting place and as a place of overcoming grief . In addition, taboos should be removed from dealing with death and grief . In addition to the social engagement with the Sepulchral Culture , cemeteries should also be made more aware of as places of cultural goods as well as " green oases " of garden culture and recreation .

Cemetery Day was first held in Germany in 2001. The initiators were the Association of German Cemetery Gardeners (BdF) in the Zentralverband Gartenbau eV together with numerous nationwide active cemetery gardeners , stone masons , undertakers and florists , but also with a number of cities and municipalities , various religious communities and associations.

Since 2014, the day of the cemetery has also been offered in Switzerland. Initiators are the members of the Association of Swiss Urban Gardeners and Horticultural Offices (= Union Swisse des Services des Parc et Promenades ).
