Tiaret ( Arabic تيارت, DMG Tiyārat , tamazight ⵜⵢⴰⵔⴻⵜ Tyaret ; also Tihert , Tahert or Tehert ) is the capital of the province of the same name Tiaret in Algeria . It is considered a traditional trading center and has its own university.
history
Already in Roman times there was a Roman base at this place, which was called Tingurtia.
Between 788 and 909 Tiaret was the seat of the Imam of the Rustamids and a flourishing center of the Trans-Saharan trade . The historical settlement, however, was 9 km west of today's Tiaret. The place had abundant water sources and was protected by its natural location and a city wall with four gates.
Modern
In 1863 the modern Tiaret was founded. The city has around 201,000 inhabitants today, more than 99% of whom are Muslims , and covers an area of around 300 km². It is located about 250 km southwest of Algiers at the intersection of National Road 14 and National Road 23 .
Since 2016 the place has been the headquarters of the Tahkout Manufacturing Company , which employs 500 people.
