Hamid Baroudi (born February 20, 1960 in Tiaret ) is an Algerian - German singer , guitarist , lyricist and world musician . The politically active musician is a pop and rock star in Algeria and one of the most important world musicians.

Life

Hamid Baroudi grew up in his native Algeria. He made his stage debut in 1976. He moved to France in 1981 . From 1984 to 1988 he studied in Kassel Visual Communication at the University of Kassel . After that he was a street musician and played songs by Bob Dylan and was finally the front singer of the band Dissidents for six years . He toured with Peter Gabriel's WOMAD -Festivalorganisation by England , Spain and Japan . His song Caravan to Baghdadwas on the index list in 1991. Nevertheless, the song managed to climb straight to number 1 in 17 countries. The song is still one of the most successful pieces of music in the Arabic music world. In 1994 he was awarded the City of Kassel Culture Promotion Prize. The politically committed musician performed in Bonn with Herbert Grönemeyer and Wolf Maahn in front of 200,000 spectators at the 1994 Festival against the Gulf War . Baroudi worked with the jazz musician Edgar Knecht and DJ Krush . He played at the Forest Jump Festival in Aichwald near Esslingen as well as at the Burg-Herzberg-Festival 1997. In 2010 he appeared at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai . During Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Maghreb trip in 2015, he provided the musical accompaniment for the program in the German Embassy in Tunis

Hamid Baroudi lives alternately in Kassel and Algeria.

His music is characterized by the rhythms of the Maghreb and a mix of languages. Baroudi writes protest songs against oppression and terrorism , using the means of cosmopolitan pop . He combines flamenco guitars with keyboards and Indian percussion . The singer sings songs in English, French, Spanish and the West African language Wolof . So far he has released six albums.
