The Weinheim Viaduct near the town of Alzey in Rhineland-Hesse is a bridge on the 63 federal motorway . With its 1260 meters it is one of the 24 longest road bridges in Germany and one of the longest valley bridges in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

The girder of prestressed concrete was completed 1981st It lies between the junctions (9) Erbes-Büdesheim and (10) Freimersheim . It spans the Selztal between the town of Alzey (east) and its district of Weinheim in the west.

Due to the exposed location, light or unloaded trucks are very susceptible to strong winds and trailers can overturned. The bridge had to be closed during hurricane Kyrill on 18./19. January 2007 and a good eight years later also in mid-January and at the end of March 2015 due to hurricane gusts for safety's sake to the truck traffic. During hurricane Niklas , the speed was reduced to 40 km / h instead of the 100 km / h otherwise permitted. After the hurricane Niklas, it was considered whether the previous provisional speed limit signs should be replaced by fixed traffic signs in the future, and there should also be a warning in front of the bridge in case of strong winds. A request from local, state and federal politicians as well as the responsible motorway police Gau-Bickelheim for a windbreak on the three bridges around Alzey were rejected by the responsible ministries in Berlin and Mainz. The reason given was that the valley bridges at Dautenheim and Weinheim are not considered to be a wind-related accident accumulation point.

"Only when there is a significant accumulation of accidents as a result of the action of the wind, the responsible road construction administration in the state will check whether wind protection measures are necessary"

- Norbert Barthle (CDU), Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport , 2015

After further accidents caused by the Egon storm on January 13, 2017, another attempt was made to apply for wind protection on the bridges.

Traffic load

In the manual road traffic censuses of the Federal Highway Research Institute , which are carried out every five years, an "average daily traffic volume" (DTV) of 26,200 vehicles per day with a 13.0 percent share of heavy traffic was determined between the Erbes-Büdesheim and Freimersheim junctions. Buses, trucks> 3.5 t gross vehicle weight with and without trailers, articulated trucks) on all motor vehicles in 2010. Five years earlier in 2005 there were still 21,900 vehicles (12.4%).
