geography

The city is bounded by the Tallapoosa River to the north and Interstate 20 to the south . Bremen and Buchanan are each around ten kilometers away in an easterly and northeastern direction. The city of Atlanta is 80 kilometers away in the east. The US state of Alabama begins five kilometers west of Tallapoosa .

history

In the area of ​​today's Tallapoosa, gold prospectors first settled at the beginning of the 19th century . After the end of the gold rush , the place became a center for the timber industry and was known by names such as Pine Grove , Pineville or Possum Snout . The city was officially founded in 1860. The name that is valid today was chosen based on the nearby Tallapoosa River. The town began early with tourist facilities and was nicknamed Yankee City Under a Southern Sun .

Events

At the turn of the year, an event called Possum Drop takes place in Tallapoosa every year . A living opossum is slowly lowered into a lighted cage and reaches the floor at exactly midnight. The event is heavily criticized by animal rights activists, but is increasingly developing as a tourist attraction.
