Tamás Erdődy ( Croatian also Toma Bakač , Hungarian Tamás Erdődy de Monyorókerék et Monoszló ) (* 1558 , † January 17, 1624 in Krapina , Croatia ) was a Croatian ban from the Hungarian magnate family of Erdődy .

Life

In 1584 Tamás Erdődy, son of Count Peter II Erdődy , was appointed Ban of Croatia . He was married to Elizabeta II. Zrinski . In the same year Erdődy successfully led a battle against the Ottoman army on October 26, 1584 on the Croatian military border near Slunj . Erdődy was also militarily successful at Ivanić-Grad on December 6, 1586, where he was again able to defeat the Ottoman army. He achieved another military success on August 12, 1591, when he was able to liberate Moslavina with his army.

Tamás Erdődy experienced his first lost battle against the Ottoman army in 1592 near the Croatian town of Brest Pokupski , where Erdődy had to flee. He turned this inglorious incident on June 22, 1593 when the Ottomans besieged the Croatian city of Sisak . Ban Erdődy took part in the fighting with about 2,400 soldiers on the side of Ruprecht von Eggenberg , Melchior von Redern and Andreas von Auersperg . In total, the Croatian army had about 5,000 soldiers to deploy, while the other side, under Beylerbey Telli Hassan Pascha , who was of Bosnian-Serbian origin, had around 15,000 soldiers. Despite the military inferiority, the city of Sisak, which became famous through the Battle of Sissek , was liberated.

In 1595 Tamás Erdődy first resigned from his position as a ban. Nevertheless he took part in the " Turkish Wars ". In 1603 Erdődy was appointed Hungarian tavernikus ( treasurer ). In 1607 he was appointed Prefect of Varaždin appointed. Tamás Erdődy resumed his service as Ban of Croatia from 1608 to 1614.

Tamás Erdődy died on January 17, 1624 in Krapina .
