Tamaqua [ təmɑːkwə ] is a Borough of Schuylkill County in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States .

geography

Tamaqua is 15 kilometers east of Frackville and 10 kilometers south of Hazleton . Allentown to the southeast is about 25 miles away. The Interstate 81 runs at a distance of approximately 10 kilometers to the west, US Highway 209 through the city center.

The founder of the place in 1799 was Burkhard Moser , who came from Germany and called the settlement "Tuscarora". When it turned out that already existed a place with the same name near that point after was Tuscarora - chief Tankamochk or "Tam-a-kwah" named. In 1832 it was registered as a borough . After significant deposits of anthracite coal were found in the area , the place grew rapidly due to immigrants from Europe. The Molly Maguires miners' union had its center in Tamaqua. In 1874 a train station was built from which the coal could be transported more economically by rail. However, when other energy sources were increasingly used in the 1960s and coal production fell sharply, the number of residents decreased. The railway line was last operated by the Reading Company . Due to insufficient utilization and the significant damage caused by Hurricane Diane (1955), the station was closed and added to the National Register of Historic Places . The Tamaqua Historic District , the Anthracite Bank Building and the George Ormrod House are also registered there.
