The Tambovskaya Peak ( Russian Гора Тамбо́вская Gora Tambowskaja , Norwegian Tambovskajatoppen ) is a 2750 m high mountain in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises in the center of the Gråkammen in the western Petermann chain of the Wohlthatmassiv .
It was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . A new mapping based on aerial photographs and surveys was carried out during the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). The name goes back to a Soviet Antarctic expedition from 1960 to 1961. It is named after the Russian city of Tambov . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred the Russian name to English in 1970.
