Tani tabbal

Tani Abdul-Batin Tabbal (born January 16, 1954 in Chicago ) is an American musician ( drums , percussion , vibraphone , vocals ) of creative jazz .

Live and act

Tabbal explored the drums from the age of five; already at fourteen he began working as a professional musician and has performed with the singer Oscar Brown Jr. on. In his youth he also played in 1973 and 1974 in Sun Ra Arkestra, with whom he can also be heard on the latter's later albums Dual Change and Somewhere Else .

He later worked in Roscoe Mitchell's Sound Ensemble , of which he was a member in the early 1980s. He also formed the rhythm section of Faruq Z. Beys Griot Galaxy with Jaribu Shahid . He was part of the James Carter quartet for much of the 1990s and was involved in several of his albums ( JC on the Set , Conversin 'With The Elders ) until he fell out with him on the open stage during a concert in Berlin in 1998. He was also on a European tour with Geri Allen's band and can also be heard on their CD Maroons (1992) and was part of Craig Taborn's trio .

As a session musician, he participated in numerous recordings, including a. with Karl Berger , Anthony Braxton , Steve Coleman / Greg Osby , Oliver Lake , Muhal Richard Abrams , Craig Taborn , Henry Threadgill , Richard Davis , in David Murrays Bigband and Octet, Cassandra Wilson , in Evan Parker's Transatlantic Art Ensemble and in 2002 in the band by Hugh Ragin .

In addition, Tabbal worked on his own projects, first in the 1980s with Mitchell musicians in the formation Griot Galaxy by Faruq Z. Bey ( Opus Krampus , on Sound aspects ) and in a trio with A. Spencer Barefield and Tony Holland . ( Live at Nickelsdorf , Sound Aspects). Tabal also played in the percussion ensemble 'Pieces of Time' with Andrew Cyrille , Famoudou Don Moye and Obo Addy . In 2001 he fell ill with a brain tumor.

In addition to the drums as the main instrument, tabbal plays various percussion instruments from West Africa ( Djembé and Dunun ), North India ( Tabla ) and North Africa ( Dumbek ).
