The Taube Elbe , historically also Middle Elbe , is an old or tributary of the Elbe in the city of Magdeburg on the island of Großer Werder in the Rotehornpark .

history

South end: on the right reinforced passage from Stromelbe, left overflow from Alter Elbe at low water

Like the Zollelbe , the Taube Elbe was created in the course of silting up processes of the Elbe in or east of Magdeburg. The course of the river changed repeatedly until the building of bridges and river regulation work in the 18th century increased the accumulation of sand and gravel, so that the island of Großer Werder was formed. Of three branches of the river, the Stromelbe, the Middle Elbe and the Old Elbe , the Middle Elbe had previously been the main river. This then shifted to the Stromelbe, the city-side of the three arms. The Middle or Taube Elbe silted up and only formed oxbow lakes that started or ended blind. After the Elbe pigeon had completely silted up in places, it was partially dredged again around 1900 when the Rothehorn Park was built. In the park, a section of the Tauben Elbe was expanded by 1908, creating the Adolf-Mittag-See . In order to improve the water flow in times of low water flow, a new reinforced inlet from the Stromelbe was created in 1966 , a dam in the form of a flood ditch in the lower area to the Zollelbe prevents the backflow of Elbe water when the flood is low . Nine bridge structures , including the Adolf-Mittag-See, span the Taube Elbe, of which the Graalbrücke and the railway bridge of the disused railway line Biederitz-Magdeburg-Buckau are listed as architectural monuments .

The banks of the Taube Elbe oxbow lake are covered with sparse reeds . The flood ditch, which was created between the Adolf-Mittag-See and the Zollelbe, widens north and south of the railway bridge to form two other small and shallow lakes with strongly fluctuating water levels and considerable eutrophication . The area with the Tauben Elbe below the Adolf-Mittag-See and with the Zollelbe is only connected when the water level of the Elbe is high. The shallow waters are spawning grounds for amphibians .
