shipping
The 12-kilometer Canal de Vire et Taute , which was built in 1839 and used as an inland shipping route between Saint-Lô and Carentan , runs between the lower reaches of the Vire and Taute rivers . The canal was closed to shipping after 1944 because the lock systems were partially destroyed when the German troops withdrew. Since 2008, the surrounding communities have been trying to restore the canal for tourism on the water.
