River system of the Douve with the Taute

The Taute is a river in France that runs in the Manche department in the Normandy region . It rises near L'Hôtel Caplain , in the municipality of Cambernon , generally drains in a north-easterly direction through the marshland of the Marais du Cotentin and Bessin Regional Nature Park and flows after 40 kilometers in the municipality of Saint-Hilaire-Petitville , at the port entrance of Carentan , as a right tributary to the Douve . Above Carentan, water is branched off from the Taute in a side arm to supply the harbor basin .

shipping

The 12-kilometer Canal de Vire et Taute , which was built in 1839 and used as an inland shipping route between Saint-Lô and Carentan , runs between the lower reaches of the Vire and Taute rivers . The canal was closed to shipping after 1944 because the lock systems were partially destroyed when the German troops withdrew. Since 2008, the surrounding communities have been trying to restore the canal for tourism on the water.
