Telefe (abbreviation for Televisión Federal SA ) is an Argentine television station based in Buenos Aires .

The station emerged in 1989 from the state-owned Canal 11 , which was privatized that year and divided between the publisher Atlántida (80%) and News Corporation (20%). He has been part of the Telefónica Group since 1997 .

Telefe is currently the most commercially successful Argentine television broadcaster. He mainly shows telenovelas (TV novels) as well as various shows, including the game show Susana Giménez by the Argentinean TV presenter of the same name. In addition, the news formats Telefe Noticias and Diario de Medianoche are important, with the former also being shown in numerous regional versions.

Particularly successful programs in recent years have been the local edition of Big Brother ( El Gran Hermano ), Star Academy ( Operación Triunfo ), the local humor production Caiga Quien Caiga (CQC) and the television series Los Simuladores . The well-known humor show Videomatch also ran on Telefe for a time, but has since changed its name ( Showmatch ) and changed its concept (competition show) to competitor Canal 13 .

In addition, Telefe has international signal ( Telefe Internacional ) which is broadcast in America, Europe, Oceania and Israel.

In November 2016, Viacom acquired the television station for $ 345 million.
