The Temple de Pontaix is a Protestant church in Pontaix , a French parish in the Drôme department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , built in the 16th century. The building has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1980 . The parish belongs to the United Protestant Church of France .
location
The church fits into the row of houses in the village, which was built along the Drôme . The tower of the church stands near the bridge and the rectory was built on the opposite side , which is also protected as a monument.
history
In the 13th century the church was built as a castle chapel. From the second half of the 16th century it was used as a parish church by the strong Protestant community of the place. Even before the Edict of Nantes was repealed , the church had to be handed over to the Catholics, who used it as the parish church of St. Apollinaire until the French Revolution . After the conclusion of the Concordat in 1801, the church became Protestant again.
description
The church, built in the late Romanesque style of Provence , has two small chapels on the east facade that hang over the Drôme. The rectangular bell tower was added in the 17th century.
The frescoes from the 15th and 17th centuries that are in the choir are remarkable .
