Emergence

The project came about immediately after the band Mother Love Bone broke up . The group broke up due to the death of their singer Andrew Wood , who died of a heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 . The remaining members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament then formed their own band, which later became Pearl Jam . However, it was decided with the musicians friends Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron, the band Soundgarden to start a project in honor of Woods. Cornell wrote two songs, Say Hello 2 Heaven and Reach Down , which he dedicated to Wood and which later made it onto the album because he found them unsuitable for Soundgarden. Actually the band wanted to leave it with these two songs, but eight more were written and recorded, so that a complete album was made. The project was also joined by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. Their singer Eddie Vedder sang in a duet with lead singer Chris Cornell on Hunger Strike and took part in other songs in the background. At the same time, the Pearl Jam debut Ten was made . Temple of the Dog was completed between November and December 1990 and was released on April 16, 1991 on the record company A&M Records . The album was produced by Rick Parashar, who also plays on Call Me a Dog, Times of Trouble and All Night Thing piano and on the latter also organ. Besides him, Ken Perry was responsible for the mastering. The artwork was created by bassist Jeff Ament together with Rich Frankel, Walberg Design and the photographers Lance Mercer and Josh Taft. Don Gilmore was also involved in the production as a sound engineer. The first single on the album was Hunger Strike, to which the band shot their only music video in Discovery Park under the direction of Paul Rachman . In the background of the performing band you can see Bainbridge Island , the home of Andrew Wood. Other singles were Say Hello 2 Heaven and Pushin Forward Back.

reception

The album did not make it into the charts at first. It was not until Pearl Jam Ten's successful debut album , which reached number two on the Billboard 200 , that the project attracted greater attention. In 1992 , Temple of the Dog placed fifth on the US charts and in the same year received a platinum award for over one million copies sold. In Canada, too, the band secured the record for over 100,000 units sold.

The first single Hunger Strike made their only entry into a regular hit list in Europe in the United Kingdom, where the song was placed at number 51 and stayed in the charts for two weeks.

The album was largely positively received by critics. In Rock Hard , Thomas Kupfer awarded nine out of ten points. He described the style as a "mishmash of Seventies Influences and Psychedelic excesses", which can hardly be surpassed in such intensity. Above all, he praised the guitar work, which to him sounds like "played in a drug intoxication". He also emphasized Cornell's vocals in connection with the instrumentalization: "[...] very long instrumental passages and in the middle the vocals of Chris Cornell, which sometimes sound flattering, then broken again, then again imploring, almost pleading." That would be fascinating too The fact that the songs never sound “whistled”.

Track list

All lyrics were written by Chris Cornell. The music was almost exclusively composed by Cornell. Besides Pushin Forward Back , Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard contributed to the music. For Times of Trouble and Four Walled World , only Gossard composed the music with Cornell.
