Tephra was a post-metal and sludge band from Braunschweig, founded in 2003 and dissolved in 2012 .

history

Tephra were founded towards the end of 2003 under the name Cityslickers. Already at the first concert, the owners of the record label Riptide Records became aware of the band and offered Tephra the publishing of an album. The debut of the band, renamed Tephra, was limited to 312 copies in 2004 and sold in a very short time, whereupon Riptide Records reissued the self-titled debut in 2005 as a CD. Due to the early cooperation with a label, there was also a collaboration with the booking agency Dial-Booking, whereby the band appeared at the beginning of their career as support for Darkest Hour and Cult of Luna .

Ercüment Kasalar sang on the albums FluXion and Aeolian of the post-metal band The Ocean and was co-founder of the grindcore band Hellblazer in 2004 . In 2007 the second Tephra album A Modicum of Truth was released , also on Riptide Records. Before the release, Tephra Red accompanied Sparowes on a European tour. Following the release, the band toured independently from October 2007 in Germany and the Czech Republic . In 2008 Kasalar founded the death-'n'-roll band General Chaos with Carsten "Antek" Rudo ( Such a Surge , Revolver ) and Hendrik Bache ( Devoyd , Dew-Scented , Protector ) , whose debut Calamity Circus was released in 2010 .

In 2011 Tephra released their third studio album Temple via Golden Antenna Records , the tour announced for this was postponed several times. In 2011 Kasalar suffered from a severe stomach ulcer and had to seek medical treatment, as a result of which the start of the tour was delayed and the social fabric of the band was affected. Despite emerging differences, the band celebrated the announced Germany tour in spring 2012 and a small tour through Russia in September of the same year. On September 26, 2012, the band announced the definitive leaving of the band on their homepage and on social media . In addition to health aspects, personal and musical differences were given as reasons. The separation of the band was also aimed at trying to maintain the friendship of the musicians.

style

The band's first releases were based on post-metal bands such as Isis , The Ocean and Cult of Luna . Tephra have been compared several times with the popular representatives of the genre. "While the music of comparable bands [...] flows slowly towards the climax half of the time, TEPHRA often break out for minutes". With their last album Tephra changed the style and put the vocals in the background. In addition, the music was increasingly varied in the direction of progressive sludge bands such as Mastodon and Baroness .

“Here and there extremely progressive and eccentric elements a la MASTODON appear, sometimes even jazzy or 70s-like song structures blow into your ear canals. Nevertheless, the beloved and TEPHRA-typical sludge sound is never lost, and the vocals remain familiar. In general, however, TEPHRA have moved away from the typical 'build up reef and tear down at the end' structure, at least a little. But that's exactly what reminds you of older albums. "
