Terence Longdon
Terence Longdon (born May 14, 1922 in Newark-on-Trent , Nottinghamshire as Hubert Tuelly Longdon , † April 23, 2011 in Oxford , Oxfordshire ) was a British actor .
life and career
Terence Longdon served as a pilot with the Fleet Air Arm during World War II . From 1946 to 1948 he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , followed by stage roles at the West End and in the Shakespeare Memorial Company in Stratford-on-Avon under the direction of Anthony Quayle . Longdon remained connected to the theater for decades, playing various characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Mr. Darcy in an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice .
His first film and television roles came in the early 1950s. Mostly he embodied cultivated and educated characters, who often appeared unsympathetic or dodgy. Longdon was able to establish himself as a cinema actor in the 1950s and played many supporting roles, including in four films in the carry-on comedy series between 1958 and 1961. He also became known for his participation in the classic film Ben Hur by William Wyler , in which he played Drusus , the secretary and confidante of the Messala played by Stephen Boyd . Longdon had one of his few leading roles between 1959 and 1962 as pilot Garry Halliday in the BBC children's series of the same name . From the late 1960s, Longdon shifted back mainly to the theater work and his film and television roles became rarer. Most recently he was in a small role in front of the camera in a small role in the television biography Hitler - Rise of Evil in 2003 .
Longdon was married to his actress colleague Barbara Jefford from 1953, and they divorced in 1960. From 2004 until his death he was married to Gillian Conyers for the second time. Longdon died of cancer in April 2011 at the age of 88.
