Terence James "Terry" Thomas, Baron Thomas of Macclesfield CBE (born October 19, 1937 - July 1, 2018 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party and the Co-operative Party and banker .

life and career

Thomas was the manager of the National Westminster Bank , later the National Provincial Bank . From 1971 to 1973 he worked initially as a research manager and later as head of national sales.

In 1973 Thomas started a position at the Co-operative Bank as a marketing manager. He served there as chief executive for nine years and retired in the late 1990s.

He was from 1990 to 1996 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the East Manchester Partnership and Founding Chairman ( Chairman ) of the North West Partnership . From 1997 to 1998 he was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Capita Group .

Thomas was a member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and, from 1983 to 1985, senior auditor in the marketing of financial services. From 1988 to 1991 he was visiting professor at the University of Stirling . He was Chairman of Venture Technic ( Cheshire ) Ltd from 1984 to 2000. He held this position from 1998 to 1999 with the North West Media Trust Ltd , and from 1998 to 2002 with the North West Development Agency . He was also Chairman of Vector Investments .

He was a non-executive director of Stanley Leisure plc and from 1998 to 1999 he was with English Partnerships (Central) and the Commission for the New Towns . He was a member of the Board of Trustees at the Campaign to Promote the University of Salford (CAMPUS). He also held this position at UNICEF .

Membership in the House of Lords

Thomas was named Life Peer as Baron Thomas of Macclesfield, of Prestbury in the County of Cheshire on November 5, 1997 . He gave his inaugural address on February 11, 1998.

On the House of Lords website, he named North West England as subjects of political interest.

In 1999 he suffered a stroke . Although he remained active, in the following years he initially only responded in written questions. It was not until April 2004 that he spoke again in the House of Lords. On December 8, 2008, he spoke up again. He has not spoken there since then.

He was a member of the House of Lords Monetary Policy & European Affairs Select Committees .

He was also Specialist Chairman of Opportunity in 2000 , advocating women's rights in the workplace. He was a member of the Regional Policy Forum , President of the Society for Co-operative Studies , Honorary President of the North West Co-operative and Mutual Council, and Life President of the North West Business Leadership Team .

Thomas was sporadically present on meeting days after his serious illness. After 2010, he did not attend any more meetings. He had been on leave of absence since June 21, 2012 by a Leave of Absence issued by the House of Lords . On May 18, 2016, Thomas of Macclesfield resigned from the House of Lords for absence for a period of more than six months under the provisions of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014.

Other offices

Thomas was President of the Manchester Settlement , Vice President of the Northern Friends of Arms, and the Industrial Trust . He was also the patron ( saint ) of the Red Rose Forest , Mersey Forest , the Pedestrians Association , West Lancs Disability Helpline , Mines Advisory Group and the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester .

His autobiography An Inclusive Community with Integrity was published in 2008 and detailed a two-year struggle to keep the Co-operative Wholesale Society from selling the bank. There he was president from 1988 to 1995. He was a non-executive director at the Robert Owen Memorial Museum .

Honors

Thomas became Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997 .

He became an Honorary Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire . In 1996 he became a Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt) from the University of Salford . The Manchester Metropolitan University drew Thomas from 1998 with an honorary doctorate from the university. He also did this at the University of Manchester in 1999 and at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in the same year .

1998 was Thomas Mancunian of the Year . He was a Fellow of the Corporation of Insurance Brokers and the Royal Society of Arts (since 1992) and Companion of the Institute of Management .
