Tesauro dei Beccheria
Tesauro dei Beccheria OSBVall (* in Pavia ; † September 12, 1258 in Florence ), also Tesoro Beccaria or Tesauro Beccaria , was the seventeenth Abbot General of the Vallombrosans . He is venerated as a martyr in the Benedictine order .
Life
Tesauro Beccaria came from a Padovan noble family and joined the Benedictine order of the Vallombrosans. He took the religious vows , became abbot and in 1252 Abbot General of his order .
He took up an assignment as a papal legate in Florence to mediate between the Ghibellines and Guelphs . The Guelphs ruling there accused him - probably wrongly - of making common cause with the Ghibellines living in exile and of making a pact with Manfred of Sicily .
Tesauro dei Beccheria was tortured , sentenced to death and beheaded on September 12, 1258 in the Piazza di Sant'Apollinare in Florence . His burial place is not known.
Aftermath
Dante
In Dante's Divina Commedia , Tesauro dei Beccheria is depicted as one of the traitors who are enclosed in eternal ice at the bottom of the tenth and lowest circle of hell:
Inferno , XXXII, 118–120:
Se fossi domandato "Altri chi v'era?",
Tu hai dallato quel di Beccheria
di cui segò Fiorenza la gorgiera.
Translation:
And if you ask who else is hiding this ice cream,
there you can see Becheria’s eyes dripping,
The Florentines recently fluted.
Controversial cardinalate
Since the 16th century it has been claimed again and again that Tesauro dei Beccheria was elevated to cardinal deacon of an unspecified titular deacon by Pope Alexander IV in December 1255 . However, his authenticating signature never appears on a papal bull at the time in question . In fact, he was probably never a cardinal, but only vicar of Cardinal Ottaviano Ubaldini .
Adoration
Tesauro dei Beccheria's name was included in the Benedictine martyrology , his feast day there is September 4th.
