The Tesla Gigafactory 3 (also Gigafactory Shanghai ) is one of Tesla, Inc. operated battery cell - and electric car - factory in Shanghai , China .

history

Planning

The sub-sub-company Tesla Shanghai was founded on May 8, 2018 with a registered capital of 100 million yuan , which is 100% owned by Tesla Motors Hong Kong . In July 2018, Elon Musk signed an agreement with the Shanghai city government to build the factory.

The expropriation of the proposed property was issued on August 20, 2018 . On September 26, 2018, the 86-hectare property in Lingang, Shanghai, was put out to tender , with the precondition that it would be used for the production of electric cars .

The contract also stipulated that construction should start within 6 months and be completed within 30 months, with production starting after 36 months and full minimum tax revenues being paid after 60 months.

Tesla Shanghai was the only bidder to bid 973 million renminbi for the 50-year lease, and was awarded the contract on October 17, 2018. The lease was supported by a $ 1.4 billion loan from Chinese banks.

construction

The Shanghai City Government issued planning permission for December 29, 2018. The construction company was China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd. , Part of China State Construction Engineering .

The site was leveled by December 2018 . Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong visited the construction project on December 5th. A subsidiary of China Minmetals was preparing for pile foundations .

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 7, 2019 . By March, foundations had been made in some areas of the property , with the crews working in multiple shifts on site to expedite construction.

The building construction was almost completed by the beginning of August 2019, so that the establishment of the production facilities began with the aim of starting test production of battery cells and cars in November. The plant was on 19 August removed .

The factory site was completed with 65% less capital expenditure than was the case with the Gigafactorys in the USA with the same building area.

At the end of 2019, the construction of additional production facilities for engines, seats and drive trains began and is expected to be completed in March 2020.

production

Production of 250,000 electric cars per year is initially planned at the production site, in which, in addition to battery cells, the Tesla Model 3 car model and, in the further course of production, the Tesla Model Y will be produced in 2021 . Tesla said it had long-term plans to produce 500,000 electric vehicles per year at the site. Tesla calculated to produce more than 6,000 vehicles in Gigafactory 3 by the end of 2019.

The first Tesla vehicles built in China, construction of which began in November 2019, were ready for delivery at the end of the same year. The first 15 cars from the new plant were delivered to the new owners, who were Tesla employees themselves, on December 30, 2019.

The first batch of cars manufactured in the Gigafactory were delivered on January 7, 2020. In January 2020, Tesla decided to reduce the original market price of the Tesla Model 3 from $ 50,000 to $ 42,919. The production rate was around 1000 cars per week in the first few months.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Giga Shanghai was temporarily closed on January 29, 2020 by order of the Chinese government . Production, including its suppliers, resumed on February 10th.
