The Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg (also Giga Berlin and Gigafactory 4 ) is a large-scale factory under construction for the automobile manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide , Brandenburg , within the Berlin agglomeration area . Construction started in the first quarter of 2020. Template: future / in 2 yearsProduction with the Tesla Model Y is scheduled to start in July 2021 (1st construction stage). Model 3 will follow later . Tesla expects construction costs of 1.065 billion euros. Starting in July 2021, up to 12,000 employees in three-shift operation are expected to produce at least 100,000 vehicles per year.

history

On November 12, 2019, Elon Musk announced the construction of a gigafactory in Germany on the occasion of the awarding of the Golden Steering Wheel . The production facility for electric vehicles and batteries is to be built in Grünheide near Berlin Brandenburg Airport . A design and development center is also planned in Berlin itself. Until recently, the location between Weilerswist and Euskirchen was a favorite for the Gigafactory.

According to Brandenburg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Jörg Steinbach , the multi-billion dollar investment will create “over 3,000 jobs in the first expansion stage”. Analogous to the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, he estimates 7,000 to 8,000 jobs in the full expansion stage.

The approval process started at the beginning of January 2020, and the Brandenburg State Parliament approved the purchase agreement for the forest. It became GDR times from the Stasi used, which is to have trained there in a sealed-off secret settlement with 500 employees terrorists raided packages from West Germany and the ownership out reister GDR citizens einlagerte. The purchase price for the 302 hectares should be around 41 million euros. Construction work began in the same quarter.

Completion is scheduled for July 2021. Systems are to be built for the manufacture of vehicle parts, batteries and drives, for final assembly and for site logistics.

The public documents are the first stage of expansion (part of the parking lots and the first building). Three more buildings of the same size, additional parking spaces and ancillary facilities are to follow.

The building land acquired by Tesla is within the scope of a qualified development plan according to § 30 BauGB and is classified as an industrial area in accordance with § 9 BauNVO shown. The development plan no. 13 "Freienbrink-Nord" of the community Grünheide, which was adopted as a statute in 2000, was originally intended for the settlement of a new BMW AG production facility. In the summer of 2000, however, the company decided on a location in the state of Saxony. The location of the planning area north of the Berlin East / Freienbrink freight center provides Tesla with good location conditions thanks to its transport links and the potential available space. The availability of a suitable, legally binding development plan also gives Tesla a time advantage in project planning.

Changed construction documents were published in July 2020. In addition to other changes, the battery and plastic production are no longer required.

Factory data

South access to the construction site of the Tesla Gigafactory 4 (July 2020)

As of July 2, 2020, Tesla is expecting the following data:

Area planning

  • Total area (designated as an industrial area): 3,038,620 m 2
  • Clearance (1st construction stage): 1,932,700 m 2
    • Covered: 729,000 m 2
    • paved traffic area: 301,000 m 2

Planned plant components

The production building will be 15 meters high, the press shop and paint shop 24 meters high. The main system is directly assigned to the high-bay warehouse , supply u. Disposal facility (energy center, tank farm , waste and hazardous materials store, transformer station ), wastewater treatment , ancillary facilities (including offices, gatehouse, company fire brigade), logistics and a test track.

Energy demand

The use of 9250 standard cubic meters of natural gas per hour is planned for the central heating system and production steps . An electricity requirement of 72 MW is expected, which is to be drawn entirely from the public grid.

Jobs

From July 2021, production is expected to start around 500,000 cars annually in three shifts , 24 hours a day. At least 2100 employees are expected to be deployed per shift. According to various information from Tesla, a total of 10,500 to 12,000 jobs will be created.

Network connection

In order to connect the Gigafactory, E.DIS Netz, as the responsible distribution network operator, received the order to establish a connection to the 110 kV high voltage level . The connected load should be around 109 megawatts .

Transport links

Fangschleuse station on the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway

The Berlin Brandenburg airport is just 30 kilometers from the Gigafactory removed. The Berliner Ring borders the company premises directly to the west with the Freienbrink exit. The Oder-Spree Canal is five kilometers south.

According to the documents submitted for the environmental impact assessment , Tesla expects 460 truck trips per day, 2,800 cars per shift and up to six pairs of freight trains. This requires a good road connection to the plant, with even a separate motorway entrance being discussed on the northwestern edge of the plant.

The existing branch line from the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway to the Freight Transport Center in Freienbrink can be used for goods delivery and delivery . The route is about four kilometers long.

In February 2020, the municipality of Grünheide decided to move the Fangschleuse station towards the west, towards the future main gate and to replace the existing level crossing with an overpass or underpass.

Controversy

Demonstration against the factory on February 22, 2020 in Erkner.

The announcement that an approximately 150-hectare pine forest would be cleared for construction led to recurring protests in the region. Even before construction was confirmed, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk provided a certain amount of compensation by donating to support the planting of a million trees. The number is about three times the quota that is likely to be paid. In response to the protesters 'allegations that citizens did not have enough opportunities to participate, the group opened a citizens' office in the community of Grünheide. This should be a contact point for interested and concerned citizens and offer a forum for debate.
