Tesla Grohmann Automation (formerly Grohmann Engineering ) is a German mechanical engineering company with headquarters in Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . Further locations exist in Neutraubling in Bavaria , Chandler in Arizona and Shanghai .

The product portfolio includes machines for the production of microprocessors and memory chips , airbag sensors , control units for power steering as well as systems for the production of door and roof seals and lithium-ion battery cells and entire battery modules . Among other things, the company manufactures assembly machines that are used in battery and electronics production for Tesla Motors in Gigafactory 1 .

There is a close cooperation with universities within the framework of the dual study courses in mechanical engineering and automation technology . Furthermore, forms Grohmann automation in the field of industrial mechanics , technical product designers , CNC specialist , Design Technology , IT specialist , mechatronics , industrial electricians and metalworkers from.

history

The company, founded by Klaus Grohmann in 1963, has been based in Prüm in the Eifel since 1983.

On January 3, 2017, Grohmann Engineering was taken over by Tesla Motors and has been operated as Tesla Grohmann Automation GmbH since March 22, 2017. The takeover was preceded by a collaboration on the development of the Model 3 .

Founder Klaus Grohmann left the company in April 2017. The reason was a dispute with Tesla CEO Elon Musk , who had demanded that all production, especially for competitors such as BMW , Daimler , General Motors , Bosch and many others not only from the automotive industry, e.g. B. End Philips Medical Systems immediately and focus on Model 3.

Due to the termination of business relationships with all customers except Tesla and Intel , the union was not only interested in wage levels but also in a future safeguarding contract, which should keep the company and jobs in the long term if electric cars did not have the expected success. Tesla then offered Grohmann employees 150 euros a month and employee stock options worth 10,000 US dollars with a distribution over the next four years, as well as an immediate payment of 1,000 euros in cash. Tesla did not comment on the required collective agreement. In October 2017, the company reached an agreement with the employee representatives on the introduction of a competitive pay structure. According to the chairman of the works council, future pay will be at the level of the collective agreement applicable to the industry.
